S + L's Colorado Destination Micro Wedding

Sera and Lucas chose a micro wedding in Colorado to balance their biggest priorities for the day – family, nature, and having fun together.

I was the photographer and planner for Sera and Lucas’s destination micro wedding, so I got to witness the whole process of this super personal, fun-filled event as it came together. The couple landed on a micro wedding because they wanted to blend elements of a traditional wedding – like including their closest friends and family in their ceremony and reception – with things more typical of an elopement – like spending time in nature just the two of them.

Their micro wedding had about 30 guests made up of their closest friends and family, and they chose a maid of honor and best man instead of large wedding parties. They included some traditional elements, like getting ready with their closest people, a ceremony with an officiant in front of their guests, and a restaurant reception with a cake-cutting and first dance.

However, they also eschewed tradition in some ways, choosing to share their vows privately before the ceremony after their first look. After the reception, they headed to a gorgeous, serene mountain lake to take some photos, watch the sunset, and spend some private moments together. We ended their wedding day with some stunning lantern photos during blue hour, and finally a few pictures under the night sky.

Because Sera and Lucas aren’t from Colorado, they leaned on me for lots of local recommendations. I helped them select a ceremony location, a restaurant for their reception, and vendors for all their details that felt the most “them.”

Their planning process was a mix of hired vendors and DIY – the couple pulled together a lot of the little details themselves and included so many cool, personal touches.

For example, during their ceremony with friends and family, Sera and Lucas incorporated a totally unique “unity ceremony” that involved taking a shot ski together before their first kiss. It was SO fun!

Some of my favorite moments of the day were times Sera and Lucas just got to focus on having fun and spending time together – like skipping rocks at sunset and taking photos under the stars to end the night.

Another incredibly sweet moment happened during their private exchange of vows. Before their wedding, Sera and Lucas had been shopping in town together, and Sera spotted a turquoise bracelet she loved. Lucas managed to go back and buy it secretly, and he surprised Sera with it after his vows – which left Sera (and me) in tears.

One thing I love about planning and photographing microweddings is how personal they feel and how well I get to know my couples in a way that’s just more difficult with a big, traditional wedding. During planning, Sera mentioned to me how much she loves the Throne of Glass book series, and encouraged me to read them. Both myself and Sera’s maid of honor surprised her with a special edition of the two books she needed to complete her collections, and Sera remarked that she knew she’d “found her people.”

Their Advice:

  • Sera & Lucas’s biggest advice starting out, is that if you want to do a microwedding/untraditional type of day with a few guests you should find a photographer who specializes in that area, both in location + micro weddings. They were planning from 1400 miles away and had to depend on their photographer and what photos they could find online. Sera highly suggests finding someone who specializes in the type of wedding you want and the area you want to go.
  • They also suggest that you don’t just look at one photographer, and that you listen to your gut when you find the person you really like.
