As a wedding photographer, I often get asked, “If you could go back, what would you change about your wedding day?” My answer surprises people: I’d make it last even longer. And let me tell you—our wedding was already a multi-day celebration! From sunrise vows on the shores of Grand Lake to paddleboarding, sack races, and live music with our favorite people, it was everything we could have hoped for. But the truth is, when you’re surrounded by so much love, laughter, and joy, time feels like it’s flying by.

This is why there are such great advantages to planning multi-day elopements and micro weddings. They give you the chance to slow down, savor every moment without feeling rushed from one event to the next, pack even more adventure, connection, and celebration into your wedding experience. Here’s why I think it’s worth saying YES to stretching your wedding into a multi-day event.

Benefits of a Multi-Day Wedding

Time to Slow Down and Be Flexible

One of the best things about a multi-day wedding is the gift of time. Without the pressure to fit everything into a single day, you can truly soak it all in. Whether it’s waking up slow with coffee and your partner, pausing for a sunset hike, or lingering over dinner with loved ones, you can breathe easy knowing there’s room for everything you care about (and nothing you don’t).

One Day for Just the Two of You, One Day with Family + Celebrating

Imagine this: Day one is all about you and your partner—just the two of you exploring, adventuring, and savoring your love story. More of an elopement-style wedding day! Maybe it’s a sunrise ceremony in the mountains or a private picnic by a lake. Then, on day two, you can bring in your closest family and friends for a celebration that feels like a reunion and a wedding rolled into one. You get the best of both worlds: intimate moments and a celebration with all of your favorite people.

Opportunities for Big Excursions and Guided Activities

Multi-day weddings open the door to unforgettable adventures. Whether it’s a guided hike, a scenic kayaking trip, or a cozy stargazing evening with hot cocoa, you can sprinkle in experiences that make your celebration uniquely YOU. These shared activities turn your wedding into an experience that you and your guests will talk about for years—and they give you incredible memories to hold onto forever.

More Photos, More Memories

With more time comes more opportunities for your photographer to capture all the magic. The extra time means a gallery full of diverse and meaningful images that tell the whole story of your wedding experience.

Room for Flexibility

Weather shifts? No worries. Want to add a spontaneous activity? Go for it! A multi-day wedding gives you the flexibility to adjust and adapt without stress. It’s a chance to fully embrace the unpredictability of outdoor weddings and make the most of every moment.

Explore Multiple Landscapes or Switch Up Locations

Multiple days of celebrations really helps you make the most out of your destination. Can’t decide between a mountain backdrop, a forest setting, or a lakeside view? With a multi-day wedding, you don’t have to choose! Start in one location and end in another, or explore multiple landscapes for a dynamic and adventurous vibe.

Multi-Day Wedding Timeline Idea

If you’re dreaming of a multi-day wedding or elopement, here’s an inspiring timeline to help you envision how it could unfold:

Day 1: Elopement Day

  • Morning: Arrive at your destination and settle into your accommodations. Start the day slow, enjoying quiet moments together as you prepare for the adventure ahead. Pamper yourselves with some relaxation time, and capture those meaningful getting-ready moments.
  • Afternoon: Head into the mountains (or your dream location) for a private vow exchange surrounded by breathtaking scenery. Spend time exploring together, soaking in the views, and basking in the excitement of your commitment.
  • Evening: Return to your accommodations for a romantic dinner prepared by a private chef. Savor the quiet intimacy of the evening before heading to bed for a well-deserved rest.

Day 2: Adventure and Family Time – Celebrate with Loved Ones

  • Morning: Start the day with a group activity that reflects your shared love of adventure—maybe a scenic hike, yoga session, or guided excursion with your favorite people.
  • Afternoon: Gather with family and friends for an intimate wedding ceremony. Share the moment with your loved ones, followed by heartfelt family photos and lots of mingling and laughter.
  • Evening: Celebrate in a relaxed and joyful way! Think backyard BBQs, a cozy dinner at a local restaurant, or a bonfire with s’mores, stargazing, and great conversation. Let the evening feel as carefree and fun as you are.

Day 3: Farewell and Reflection – A Sweet Sendoff

  • Morning: Wrap up your multi-day celebration with a heartfelt farewell brunch. Share final hugs, laughs, and moments of connection with loved ones before they depart. If you’re up for it, enjoy one last adventure together, like a chartered boat cruise, kayaking trip, or a horseback ride.

Time is the most valuable currency, especially on your wedding day—a day that will inevitably fly by faster than you can imagine. Choosing a multi-day wedding or elopement gives you the gift of slowing down, savoring each moment, and truly experiencing the joy, love, and adventure that brought you together. When it comes to celebrating your love, why not give yourself all the time in the world to make it unforgettable?
